The Citadel, situated on a highly visible spur of the Mokattam Hills of Old Cairo, was the nerve center of Egypt for almost 700 years.
Construction of the grand structure began in 1176 and was completed by Mohamed Ali Pasha, ruler of Egypt in the late 19th century. Mamluk sultans and Turkish governors resided in the Citadel, which is among the world’s most splendid monuments of medieval warfare.
The Mosque of Mohamed Ali is located inside the Citadel of Salah al-Din in Cairo. It was built by Mohamed Ali Pasha (1805–1848 AD), the founder of the Mohamed Ali Dynasty (1805–1953 AD), on the site of Mamluk palaces. He had these demolished to make room for his new building, which is also known as the “Alabaster Mosque”, in reference to its marble paneling on its interior and
exterior walls. The mosque’s twin minarets are the highest in all of Egypt, each reaching a height of 84 meters.

Khan El Khalily Bazaar
The tour also includes a visit to Khan el-Khalili, known as the Turkish bazaar during the Ottoman period, which was built in 1382 by Emir Djaharks ElKhalili, in the heart of what was then Fatimid City.
Until this day, the bazaar is a centre of trade and communion in the city and offers a wide array of antiques, handcrafts of gold.

Old Cairo
Old Cairo, the eldest district in the Egyptian capital, which was formerly the City of Phas built by Amr Ibn ElA’as. In later centuries,Romans built the fortress Babylon in the area, remnants of which still exist. Later, Old Cairo became the center of christianity in
Egypt, with as many as 20 churches built within an area of one square mile.
Only five of these historic churches remain today, nestled between many other ancient monuments that decorate the quarter.

The Hanging Church
Take the steps that lead to one of the most beautiful churches in the Middle East known as the Hanging Church. Built on top of the Roman fortress gatehouse called Babylon, the nave of the Hanging Church is suspended over the passageway. The church is approached by 29 steps. Known in Arabic as al-Muallaqah (“The Suspended”), the Hanging Church is the most famous Coptic Church in Cairo. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is thus also known as St. Mary’s Church.
Located just south of the Coptic Museum in Cairo, the Hanging Church boasts 13 magnificent pillars in its interior, representing Jesus and his 12 apostles. Listen in on the ancient liturgical Coptic language used in service and witness a living vestige of Ancient Egyptian history.

The Church of St. George
The unique Church of St. George is the only round church found in Egypt. Built in the 10th century on top of a Roman tower of the fortified town called Babylon, the church is connected to the Monastery of St. George and is the seat of the Greek Patriarchate of Alexandria. The Church of St. George was built in the 10th century, but a fire destroyed the original structure. The present church dates only from 1904. Ascend the steps along the Roman towers and see a relief of St. George slaying a dragon on the outer brickwork of the wall. inside, the austere ancient artwork graces the church with depictions of St. George and his quest to defend Christianity.

The Ben Ezra Synagogue

Located in Cairo center, was built by chief rabbi in Jerusalem Abraham Ben Ezra in the late 9th century
within the walls of the Fortress of Babylon (as Old Cairo was known in ancient times). The basilica-style temple is home to a Jewish heritage library, which includes a Torah on gazelle skin dating back to the fifth century BC and an “Atlas of Moses” manuscript. The synagogue is known principally for its storeroom, or Geniza, which housed a rich store of political, economic, and social books and manuscripts about the Rest of the day at Leisure until the departure to the airport for the final departue.
Late pickup to the airport.

Early Apr 05th (01:05) flying to Washington from Cairo (via Doha).

Travel Insurance

Please note that travel insurance is required for this trip. You may choose any provider as long as the policy includes coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, and medical expenses.

Your credit card might offer this as part of their service so please check with them, alternatively you can use the travel insurance provider of your choice.

We do always suggest you look at an option which offers ‘cancel for any reason’ as it gives you a bit more coverage for the unforeseen/not covered but it is of course more expensive to include this option.
